Dental discomfort can be unsettling and often strikes at the most unexpected times. Understanding when a concern constitutes an urgent need and knowing the immediate steps to take can make a significant difference in your comfort and treatment outcome. At Dentique Dental Spa, we believe in empowering our patients with knowledge and providing a reliable, compassionate haven for priority care.
Not every toothache requires an after-hours clinic visit, but some symptoms demand prompt professional attention to prevent complications, alleviate severe pain, or save a tooth. Consider it an urgent dental situation if you experience:
Severe, Throbbing Toothache: Pain that is persistent, intense, and not relieved by over-the-counter medication.
Swelling in Your Gums, Face, or Jaw: This can indicate an infection or abscess, which can spread and affect your overall health.
A Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Tooth: Time is critical. This is a true dental emergency.
A Loose or Extruded Tooth (Adult Tooth): Even if it hasn’t fallen out completely.
A Cracked, Fractured, or Broken Tooth – especially if it causes pain or has left a sharp edge.
Uncontrolled Bleeding from the gums or mouth following an injury.
A Lost or Severely Damaged Filling or Crown: This can expose the sensitive tooth structure and lead to pain or further damage.
A Painful Abscess or Pimple-like Swelling on the Gums: Often accompanied by a bad taste in the mouth.
If you are unsure, it is always better to err on the side of caution and contact a dental professional.
For a Knocked-Out Tooth:
Handle the tooth only by the crown (the chewing surface), never the root.
Gently rinse it with water or milk if dirty. Do not scrub or use soap.
If possible, try to place it back in the socket, holding it in place with gentle pressure.
If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist. Place it in a container of milk, a saline solution, or your own saliva. Do not let it dry out.
Contact us or seek emergency care immediately. The highest chance of saving the tooth is within 60 minutes.
For a Cracked Tooth or Severe Toothache:
Rinse your mouth gently with warm water.
Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed if needed.
Avoid applying painkillers (like aspirin) directly to the gums, as this can burn the tissue.
